How to Get Rid of a Puffy Face in the Morning (and Find Out Why It Happens)

Updated October 2026 · By the Drena developer

Short answer. Morning puffiness is mostly fluid, so the quick fix is a few minutes of light drainage toward the ears and collarbone, and the lasting fix is finding what sets it off. Drena pairs a 4-minute gua sha de-puff routine with a daily Morning Score and a personal trigger map, so you learn whether salt, short sleep, alcohol or something else is behind your mornings.

Step by step

  1. Rate four zones when you wake upIn Drena you rate face and jaw, belly, legs and ankles, and hands and arms on a five-point scale. It takes about 30 seconds and becomes your Morning Score.
  2. Run the morning de-puff routineOpen the Morning de-puff gua sha routine (4 minutes): cheek to ear, jaw to ear, under-eye bone to temple, brow to temple, forehead to temple, then neck to collarbone.
  3. Tag what happened the evening beforeDrena offers triggers such as salty meal, alcohol, short sleep, flight, heat, cycle phase, carb-heavy day, hard workout and stress or crying.
  4. Repeat for a couple of weeksThe trigger map unlocks after 14 days of history and names a trigger only with at least eight mornings on each side of the comparison.
  5. Act on your own resultIf a trigger shows a meaningful effect, change that one thing. If the effect is under 3 points, Drena reports no clear effect rather than inventing one.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my face puffy in the morning?

Common contributors are a salty meal, alcohol, short sleep, lying flat, hormonal cycle phase and stress. These are general patterns, which is why Drena compares your own mornings instead of assuming.

Is the Morning Score a streak?

No. It is daily and deliberately does not accumulate, because drainage effects last hours, not weeks.

How does Drena find my triggers?

It compares the average score on mornings after a trigger with mornings after none. No regression and no AI scan, just that comparison, with the number of days shown.

How many days until the trigger map works?

14 days of history, and at least eight mornings with and eight without a trigger before it names that trigger.

Does Drena scan my face with the camera?

No. You rate your own mornings. Progress photos are optional and are for comparing day one with the last day yourself.

Can I use it without paying?

Drena has a free trial of Drena Pro. Check-ins, programs and the trigger map are part of Pro, and four articles are free to read. See the App Store listing for current prices.

When should I see a doctor?

If swelling is sudden, one-sided or painful. Drena is a wellness app for everyday puffiness and is not a medical device.
